Summer IT Review: What SMEs Need Before September

Most businesses use summer as a natural pause. Projects slow, teams take holidays, and the daily grind takes a back seat. But that pause can also create blind spots in your IT operations.

A summer IT review isn't about catching up on tasks you've missed — it's about stepping back and checking whether your IT setup is positioned for the autumn months ahead. Here's what a proper mid-year review should cover.

1. Check your IT budget against actual spend

Mid-year is the right moment to compare planned versus actual IT spending. Many SMEs set their annual IT budget in January and then lose sight of it until year-end. By August, overspend may already be baked in — or there could be unused budget that's worth redirecting.

Look at your recurring costs: software licences, cloud subscriptions, support contracts. Are you paying for tools nobody uses? Are there features your team needs that aren't covered? This isn't about cutting spend; it's about making sure every pound is working for your business.

2. Where did your IT projects actually get to?

Summer is when projects lose momentum. Team members are on holiday, priorities shift, and the "we'll pick this up in September" habit creeps in. Before autumn arrives, take stock of what was planned at the start of the year and what's actually been delivered.

This isn't about blame — it's about clarity. If a project is behind schedule, does that delay affect your autumn operations? Should you extend the timeline or re-prioritise? Answering these questions now gives you a clearer picture of what needs attention when everyone returns.

3. Is your security posture still what it should be?

Summer brings different risks. Staff turnover means some people no longer have access they once had — and others may need access they didn't previously hold. Employee turnover over summer can leave security gaps that sit unnoticed for months.

Check your user permissions. Have ex-employees' accounts been deactivated? Do new starters have the right access levels? These are basic controls, but they're often overlooked during quieter months.

If you hold Cyber Essentials certification, is your certificate still valid? Has anything changed in your infrastructure that might affect your compliance status? These aren't questions to answer when a potential client asks — they're questions to have ready.

Your backup and disaster recovery arrangements deserve the same check. When was the last successful test restore? If something went wrong today, would your team know what to do?

4. How are you positioned for autumn?

The end of summer is when businesses refocus. New financial quarters begin, client priorities shift and internal teams return with fresh energy. Your IT setup should be ready to support that transition, not hold it back.

If you've been putting off infrastructure upgrades, summer was the ideal window — low pressure, available team capacity. If you missed that chance, September is the next natural point to act. The key is deciding now rather than waiting for something to break.
