Post-Holiday IT Review Checklist for UK SMEs

UK SMEs returning from summer should check devices, updates, accounts and deferred maintenance. A practical post-holiday IT review checklist to get.

Published:

Late August marks the second big return for UK businesses — not just after the August bank holiday, but after the full summer break when many teams have been running thin or not at all. For SMEs, that means IT systems left unattended through July and August need a proper check before term-time pressures hit.

This isn't a security review — we've covered that separately. This is the general IT readiness check: devices, software updates, account access, and deferred maintenance that accumulates when your team is lighter than usual.

What's accumulated while you were away?

The core issue isn't that systems break during summer. It's that small delays compound. A software update missed in July becomes a compatibility issue in September. A new employee's access details get lost in the shuffle. A backup that was never tested proves useless when you need it.

A structured post-holiday review stops those small gaps becoming bigger problems.

1. Devices and hardware

Start with the physical equipment that's been sitting idle or running hot in a warm office.

  • Laptops and desktops — if they've been left running continuously, check for performance degradation. Restart machines that have been on for weeks without a reboot.

  • Phones and tablets — check battery health on any devices that have been left plugged in or unused.

  • Wi-Fi access points — ensure routers and access points are functioning properly and haven't accumulated configuration drift.

This is straightforward but often overlooked. A device that's been running at 85°C in an unventilated cupboard during August isn't going to be reliable when term starts.

2. Software updates and patches

Summer is when update backlogs grow, because someone's always away to approve them or apply them.

  • Operating systems — check whether Windows, macOS, and any mobile OS updates are pending. Even if your security review is separate, make sure endpoint protection is up to date before the team starts working at full capacity.

  • Business applications — verify that your core tools (email, CRM, accounting software) are on the latest stable versions.

  • Drivers and firmware — a forgotten BIOS update or graphics driver can cause headaches later if deferred too long.

Don't defer this again. A backlog of ten missed updates is easier to manage than one critical patch applied three weeks late.

3. Account access and permissions

Staff return from summer holidays with different expectations about what changed while they were away.

  • New starters — check whether any team members joined during the summer still need access provisioning. A new employee starting in August who can't access their email on day one is a problem that compounds quickly.

  • Leavers — confirm that anyone who departed over the summer has had all access revoked.

  • Two-factor authentication — confirm that MFA tokens haven't expired or been reassigned to the wrong person.

This is one area where a small oversight creates big friction. Verify that every active employee has the access they need and no former employees retain any.

4. Deferred maintenance backlog

Summer is when maintenance tasks get pushed back. A post-holiday review should surface what's been deferred.

  • Backups — check that backup schedules ran through the summer and that recent restores were tested. A backup that's never been tested is a confidence exercise, not a safety net.

  • Licensing — confirm software subscriptions are current and that you're not paying for unused seats or missing licences you actually need.

  • Hardware lifecycle — flag any equipment approaching its expected replacement cycle. Summer is a good time to plan replacements before autumn pressures hit.

The goal here isn't to fix everything in one day. It's to know what's deferred, prioritise what needs attention, and plan the rest.

5. Backlog triage: what to do first

When your team is back at full capacity, not everything needs immediate action. Use this framework to triage:

  1. Critical — something that's blocking people from working now. Fix this first.

  2. Important — something that will block work soon if left. Schedule it this week.

  3. Useful — something that would be nice to address but won't cause problems if deferred. Plan it for next month.

This approach stops the post-holiday review from becoming an overwhelming to-do list and turns it into a manageable plan.

A structured approach saves time in the long run

The post-holiday IT review isn't about catching failures. It's about making sure your systems are ready for the autumn when most UK SMEs ramp up activity. A systematic check of devices, updates, accounts, and deferred maintenance takes less time than fixing the problems that accumulate while you're away.
